Why focus on childhood cancer?

While there is a general awareness about childhood diseases such as measles, malaria and cholera. Cancer is generally thought of as an adult disease. For instance, while adult cancer is covered under the National Health Insurance Scheme, childhood cancer is not.

Socio-cultural practices further inhibit awareness and treatment of the disease. According to a World Child Cancer report 17 percent of childhood mortality in Ghana is attributed to cancer and the incidence of known cases is growing and yet very few resources exist to combat the disease.

There are very few specialized health personnel and facilities for childhood cancer. Consequently, childhood cancer kills a lot more children; a situation that is aggravated by late detection and lack of financial resources in deprived communities.

According to the Cancer Society of Ghana the chances of a child surviving cancer is less than 20% compared to 51.7% for children under 5 years with malaria.

  • Our vision: is that every child with cancer in Ghana will have access to quality health care, irrespective of his/her family’s social or economic status.
  • Mission Statement: is to increase the survival rates of children with cancer through education, research, and access to affordable treatment.

  • Values: We believe that children are the future of the country and an investment in their health is an investment in our future.

There is no exercise better for the heart than reaching down and lifting people up.
