Project Description

AWARENESS & EDUCATION

For the past eight years, the Dr Robert Mitchell Memorial Foundation (RoMMeF) has
embarked on a nationwide Childhood Cancer Awareness Programme through many
activities in Accra, Tema, Kumasi and Cape Coast and via the major print and electronic
media. The aim of the programme is to raise awareness amongst the general populace
about childhood cancer which has over the years, been neglected but remains a source
of distress to many families. With the assistance of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation,
RoMMeF has translated the information on the early warning signs of childhood cancer
into six Ghanaian languages, namely Twi, Ga, Ewe, Nzema, Dagbani and Hausa to
facilitate its educational activities.

In addition to the RoMMeF initiated discussions with doctors on radio and TV about
childhood cancer, the Foundation will extend its awareness and educational activities to
Tamale and Ho in the Northern and Volta Regions respectively and during major
festivals.

Health walks were organized by the Foundation in Accra, Tema, Kumasi and Cape Coast to also educate the populace in these Metropolitan Cities on the early warning signs to help parents and children identify these signs and present at the hospital early since the emphasis is on early detection. Metropolitan Chief Executives, traditional and opinion leaders, parents and basic and secondary school children were part of the walk. Demystifying Cancer was key in the educational process
